It started with a wish of Razif H. Uno, nicknamed Henk, to establish a foundation that would not only motivate the young but also create opportunities for them to gain better education. This idea appeared after a seminar he organized years ago in Gorontalo, Sulawesi, his home Province. In which during the seminar, attended by the young generation, clearly indicated that there was a significant gap in the weight of the discussions when compared with discussions in similar seminar held in Jakarta. This portrait of human resource development may be said to be true for most provinces in Indonesia.
The future of the country as a whole is much dependent on its people in particular the young generation. Indonesia has an abundant of people held back by the unavailability of opportunities for the young to be properly educated. Thus their future is unsure and that is why more initiatives by various institutions are required to help develop these potentials.
Together with both his sons, Indra Uno and Sandiaga Uno, a foundation was started in year 2000. It was named after his wife Rachmini Rachman Uno, better known as Mien R. Uno, who is a professional educator and motivator.
In its further development, the foundation is looking into a wider range of social activities to complement its current focus on education. The fact that the vast majority of Indonesia’s population is still living in poverty and at the same time there is high joblessness among the young that cannot be addressed from the education standpoint only. It needs a complementing focus such as the initiative to encourage the young to become entrepreneurs to address the poverty issue. The foundation opines that creating entrepreneurs would be a viable solution. Mien R. Uno Foundation’s ideals are to achieve a well-educated young generation and to create a sufficient number of entrepreneurs.
These ideals would be attained through, among others:
1. Scholarships assistance, with the intention of opening opportunities for Indonesians’ young to have access to better education.
2. Mien R. Uno Foundation is currently partnering with Yayasan Karya Salemba Empat and Universitas Paramadina in disbursing its scholarship.
Facilitating entrepreneurs in micro and small sized businesses with training and capital assistance. This would be achieved through cooperation with micro finance institutions that serve as a link to those businesses.
